Synthesis
For my last Apollo project of the year I decided to synthesize the stories of Louis Zamperini and Desmond Doss. Both were very heroic figures during WW2 and I've loved their stories for awhile. I've read and watched movies about both of them and they are truly inspiring. Louis was a bombardier whose plane crashed in the middle of the Pacific. He survived multiple POW camps. Desmond was a medic who saved over 75 lives while risking his own at Hacksaw Ridge.
English
For my english project I combined the lives of Doss and Louis into one person. Then I decided to make a eulogy/obituary about my new character.
This showed synthesis because I had to combine the two stories if both the men. I had to pick out dates, features, and characteristics of each of their stories. It took a lot of sythesizing to be able to combine them into one and write about this new character.
Below is my final product.

Louis Thomas Doss
Louis Thomas Doss was born Friday February 7th 1919 in Olean NY to Louise and Anthony Doss. He moved to the small town of Florence California shortly after in 1920 with his growing family. He grew up with two sisters, Sylvia and Virginia who kept him out of trouble. Louis attended Florence high school where he became a competitive long distance runner, running the 5000m. He was inspired by his brother, Pete Doss, and his passion ended up taking him as far as the olympics. In December of 1935 he graduated from Torrance Area High School. On August 7th 1936, he ran the 5000m in the Berlin Olympics. This experience was incredibly special to Louis. After World War 2 broke out, Louie decided to enlist in the army. Throughout life Louis was known as a conscientious objector meaning he was against killing and was known as a 7th day adventest. He still decided to join the army but as a medic to help others. On May 27th 1943 while he was flying from Kouloa to Palmyra, his plane crashed in the middle of the pacific ocean. He survived the crash but he and two other crew members were stuck on a raft for 45 days until the Japanese captured them. Finally, after enduring 2 years of Prisoner of War camps he was rescued and he headed home back to his loving family. On May 26th 1945 he married his wife Cynthia and they had 2 children. Later in his life he returned to Japan to forgive the soldiers that tortured him in the Prisoner of War camps. In June 1954 Louis opened the VIctory Boys Camp to help young boys create positive experiences and help at-risk youth. After developing tuberculosis during his service he underwent treatment where he was left disabled. On July 2nd 2014 he lost his battle to tuberculosis and died peacefully at home. He was buried at the national cemetery in Chattanooga TN. He left behind his loving wife, 2 children, and 6 grandchildren.

History
For my history project I decided to create an award inspired by these two men. Firstly, I combined them into one so I could have someone to win the award. Next I combined awards that they won like the Purple Heart and Medal of Honor. By combining all these elements I was able to synthesize these two men into one. I wrote a short excerpt about the new award and its first recipient. This project probably took the most synthesizing but it was still very enjoyable.
Below is my excerpt.
Purple Medal of Heroism
The Purple Medal of Heroism is awarded to service members who have shown brave acts of heroism in the name of protecting their country. Those who have received this award have committed acts of bravery and valor after being injured or wounded by the enemy. Its first recipient was Louis Thomas Doss who President Harry S. Truman called an “American Hero”. Louis was a medic whose plane crashed in the middle of the Pacific. He survived out at sea for 45 days and was captured by the Japanese. He survived multiple POW camps and after being rescued he saved over 75 lives at Hacksaw ridge. His acts of bravery and heroism through the face of adversity earned him many military achievements. President Harry S. Truman awarded Doss with this award on September 9th 1945. In fact, President Truman was the founder of this particular award. He was inspired by the many acts of heroism shown by wounded soldiers and decided there should be a specific award for it. Truman was particularly inspired by the great acts of Doss. In his speech he wrote, “Doss is a true American Hero. We need more men like him in this country, he deserves this.”

Art
For my art project I actually did a synthesis assessment. This assessment had me look at science and art and how they could be synthesized into one. I picked an art piece and I wrote about how it exemplified the synthesis between art and science. The particular piece I chose was inspired by plants and fruits. The artist was actually inspired by plant's textures and she wanted to mimic it in a surreal way. Overall, I enjoyed this assessment but unfortunately it does not relate to my previous topic so I will not display it on my website.
